Uddrag

The Victorian Age saw a growing doubt in Christian faith and a new opposition to the established church. Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species (1859) e.g. challenged traditional religious beliefs and sparked heavy debate. Not only did Darwin's theory of
natural selection go against the concept of creation as it can be found in the Bible, it also diminished’ Man's unique role in the world. Darwin explained the origins of the universe and human being's place within it, and rejected the Christian idea that Man
had been created in Cod's image and was thereby different from the rest of the animals.
